Berlin Zoo and the Underground Bunker

Another wonderfully sunny day in Berlin, and we decided to head off to the Zoo. It opened in 1844, was flattened during war, then rebuilt to what it is today. Covering 84 acres it is the most visited Zoo in Europe. I’m not normally one for Zoo’s, however Berlin is one that is actively works with with many universities, research institutes, and other zoos around the world. It also leads European breeding programmes, helps save several endangered species, and participates in several species reintroduction programs.

In the afternoon we went on an Underground Bunker tour. It was in fact an underground shelter, but none the less very interesting. One thing I wasn’t expecting was to be told not to touch the painted walls. Our guide then demonstrated why….. She shone her touch up and down the white paint and then turned the lights completely out….and what we saw was the fluorescent paint glowing quite brightly still after 70 years !!! Amazing…but probably not good when in contact with you skin.
